— Emma Bee Bernstein, 1985-2008 —

My friend Emma passed away this weekend. She was absurdly smart and talented and beautiful, and I owe so much of who I am today to having known her. Here are two songs she shared with me when we first met eight years ago, which to this day I can’t hear without thinking of her.
Weezer, “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here”
The Cure, “Just Like Heaven”

This is great. I was close to Emma when were were in middle school. She introduced me to Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney. She was a walking radio station, tuned only to the most dynamic of music.
