My friend Emma passed away this weekend. She was absurdly smart and talented and beautiful, and I owe so much of who I am today to having known her. Here are two songs she shared with me when we first met eight years ago, which to this day I can’t hear without thinking of her.

Weezer, “The World Has Turned and Left Me Here”

The Cure, “Just Like Heaven”

  1. she made me listen to leftover crack and the moldy peaches. i hated both of them.

  2. Heh, that sounds about right. She must have been a better judge with me, though; the second week she knew me she invited herself to my house with about 30 CDs in tow and I liked just about all of it. I think I’ve still got some of the tapes I made.

  3. This is great. I was close to Emma when were were in middle school. She introduced me to Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney. She was a walking radio station, tuned only to the most dynamic of music.
